Johann Eyfells was born in Iceland in 1923 and has exhibited his work internationally since the 1960's. Among the numerous exhibitions of his work are shows at the Louisiana Museum in Denmark in 1962, the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, The 45th Venice Biennale, The Corcoran Museum of Art and his participation as one of the "World Artists at the Millenium" an invitational fine art exhibition held at the United Nations in New York City in 1999.
Known for his bold exploration of materials and ideas, Eyfells continues to work singlehanded in a wide variety of media from paper and cloth to concrete, molten metals to latex rubber and floating inflatables and metal constructions. His visions are realized by his working alone on a heroic and imposing physical scale that would intimidate most artists.
Eyfells exploration and re-examination of the three primary geometric forms: the circle, square and triangle as realized in three dimensions as the sphere, cube and pyramid are central to his work. The configuration of the spiral also continues to be everpresent in his creative thinking.
His complex personal aesthetic philosophy consists of an expansion of language itself in order to describe the dynamics of mass, form, energy and time interacting in his creations. His neo-logisms include concepts of receptualism, linguisticity and a cross section of time.
His 1992 one person exhibition at the National Museum of Art in Reykjavik, Iceland was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog and an original essay by the internationally acclaimed critic and art historian Dr. Donald B. Kuspit.
Eyfells resides and works daily at his sculpture ranch located just outside of Fredericksburg, Texas and is creating a series of 30 foot tall mobile metal spiral constructions.
